Things to Do Around St. George Island + Apalachicola, Florida
If you're planning a trip to the Forgotten Coast, you're in for a slow-paced, sun-soaked treat. Whether you're booking a family session, an elopement, or just need a break from the beach for a few hours, here are some of my favorite things to do while you're in the area—photographer-approved and memory-making guaranteed.
1. 🍦 Grab a Cone from Aunt Ebby’s Ice Cream (SGI Must-Do)
No trip to SGI is complete without a stop at Aunt Ebby’s. Right off the main strip, this iconic spot serves up scoops of nostalgia with unbeatable views of the Gulf. Try their hand-dipped flavors and enjoy it upstairs on the deck overlooking the water. The crowds tends to be heavier after sunset so grab one before to enjoy with the sunset.
Pro Tip: Bring your Polaroid camera if you have one.
2. 🛶 Paddle the Bay or Gulf with Journeys of St. George Island
For a little adventure, rent a kayak or paddle board and explore the serene waters of the Apalachicola Bay or the open Gulf. Journeys offers eco-tours, rentals, and fishing trips that let you see dolphins, birds, and hidden gems most tourists miss.
3. 🍽️ Dine at The Owl Café in Downtown Apalachicola
A charming bistro right in the heart of historic downtown, The Owl Café is perfect for a dinner out after a day on the beach or a photo session. Their seafood is locally sourced, the cocktails are strong, and the vibes are always cozy.
4. 📸 Explore the SGI Lighthouse & Park
Climb to the top of the historic lighthouse for stunning 360° views of the island and Gulf. The lighthouse park below is a perfect pre-session hangout spot, and the light filtering through the dunes is a dream for golden hour photos.
5. 🎨 Shop Local in Apalachicola’s Boutiques + Art Galleries
Take a stroll through Water Street and Avenue E in Apalach, where you'll find local art, coastal gifts, and historic charm in every storefront. Don’t miss The Tin Shed for the best coastal antiques or Riverlily for beautiful handmade goods.
6. 🥾 Hike or Birdwatch at St. George Island State Park
Whether you're into shelling, wildlife spotting, or just a peaceful walk along untouched dunes, this park offers 9 miles of pristine coastline. It’s also one of my favorite hidden spots for early-morning sessions or quiet elopements.
7. 🦀 Crack Some Shells at Up the Creek Raw Bar
If oysters are your thing, this laid-back waterfront eatery is a must. Casual picnic-table seating, live music, and cold drinks make it a favorite for both locals and visitors.
